She is shaking

Crying

Her Friend is

On the other side of

That door

Her Friend cannot

See her

Hear her

Laugh with her

Cry with her

On the other side of

That door

Her Friend would

Not even know

How afraid

She is there

On the other side of

That door

On the other side of

That door

Her Friend lies restrained

By those same chains

Of her own

Mother’s Legacy

On the other side of

That door

Reaching to touch

A warm loving memory

Startled to find this

Lifeless barrier

In its stead

Blurred focus

The Threshold

Unaware

On the other side of

That door

On the other side of

That door

She fears there is

a stranger

With her

Friend’s face

Her heart says stay

Her heart says go

Run

Keep the memory

Forget the reality

She remembers

Childhood promises

Left behind

With childhood

dreams

She stands

Torn

On the other side

Of that door
